Flourish with water
71% of the world is water and between a massive 50 – 65% of the human body is comprised of water.
Without over-exaggerating, it’s fair to say water is a pretty big deal for life on our little blue planet.
To sustain a healthy body water consumption is a daily ritual, something we can’t live for very long without.
Water helps manage body temperature and plays an important role in the majority of chemical reactions that take place in the body. Simply put, if you are dehydrated your body stops working as well as it should. Imagine a power plant only producing half the amount of power it can create due to being understaffed and poorly managed.
All of the right tools and equipment are there but they can’t be used properly to output more energy because one valuable resource is missing. For humans, more energy means better motivation, happier moods and more motivation for tasks and activity.
Something as simple as constipation can stem from being dehydrated. Your large intestine absorbs water and salts as stools pass through however, if the body is dehydrated it absorbs more water from the stool. Water is needed for a healthy stool, it aids peristalsis (muscle contractions that move food through the Gastrointestinal tract). When vast amounts of water are absorbed back into the body, the stool becomes dehydrated which leads to difficult passing of the stool.
One of the most important functions of water is utilised in the kidneys which are situated in line with your 9th and 10th ribs.
Water helps eliminate toxins from the body, the kidneys are mini processing and filtration plants which depend on large amounts of blood and water to safely eliminate toxins out of the body. Toxins that are continually created as a by-product of keeping your body upright and conscious.
In some cases, kidney stones can form if there is a chronic issue with dehydration. Dehydration is a trigger for stress hormones to be released into the body. Such hormones can affect insulin levels and blood pressure. A hormone called Vasopressin can be released from the hypothalamus region of the brain that tells the body to increase the uptake of water and constricts the arterioles (small blood vessels) of the body, this will increase the pressure of the blood in the system. If this is sustained over a long period of time blood pressure issues may begin.
The importance of water can not be overstated, it is something everyone should be mindful of and should have a good daily routine in place to meet adequate consumption.
A rough guide will look like this.
Multiply your weight by two thirds to calculate how much water you need to drink on a daily basis. For example, if you weigh 160 pounds, the calculation will be as follows: 160 × 2/3 = 107 ounces (3.15 liters) of water per day.
This formula will change depending on sex, age, activity, weather. The more you exercise the greater the amount of water you need becomes.
To finish here are some common symptoms of when your body is telling you that more water is needed.
- feeling thirsty
- dark yellow and strong-smelling urine
- feeling dizzy or lightheaded
- feeling tired
- a dry mouth, lips and eyes
- urinating little, and fewer than 4 times a day
